Learn to Fly

As I just made it through security in Boston’s Logan International Airport, I am puzzled. Do people not fly? Do they not know the procedures for security? It really isn’t too difficult a process if you are prepared. I read a post about it a few months ago, but I can’t find it at this time. So I will make my own list of tips. If everyone would follow these, going through security would be a breeze for all.

Before you leave the house:

  • If you are carrying on any liquids, make sure they are in bottles 3 oz. or smaller
  • Place all these items in ONE clear quart-sized ziplock bag (not gallon or a size you choose; it must be quart-sized)
  • Wear shoes that you can remove quickly

On your way to security:

  • Remove your watch and any other jewelry and place in your carry-on bag
  • Put your cell phone in your carry-on bag (you can live without it for a few minutes)
  • Remove anything else from your pockets and put it in your carry-on bag
  • Take off your belt and place it in your carry-on bag
  • Have your picture ID and boarding pass ready to show several times
  • As you get close, remove your laptop from your bag (if applicable)
  • As you get close, remove your quart-sized ziplock bag from your carry-on bag (if applicable)

Once you arrive at security:

  • Place your shoes and coat (if applicable) in one of the bins
  • Place your laptop in a bin
  • Place both bins on the belt
  • Place your bag(s) on the belt
  • Once your items have started through, proceed through the metal detector and show the agent your boarding pass and picture ID.

After walking through the metal detector:

  • Grab your two bins and bag(s)
  • Move away from the “ejection” area
  • Make sure you have everything
  • Find a place to “redress”

Following these simple steps will make the process much more straightforward and quicker for everyone involved.

I posted on this a couple months ago. I dread flying for work now. Not because of air travel itself, but because of the people. People get stupid in airports for some reason. How hard is it to realize that you are going through a metal detector so you should remove all metal objects on your person PRIOR to? It’s a metal detector, it detects metal. You can’t confuse it. Also, the gates are numbered IN ORDER and yet people walk with a bewildered look on their faces.
Oh, the security checkpoint, people are scared crapless, its like they’ve never been asked to follow directions before.
I’d like to add as well, if you are intimadated and/or confused by touch screen technology then the Self Check-In kiosks are not for you. Get out of the way so that those of us living in the 21st century can check in faster, you go stand in line for 30 minutes. That’s your stupid punishment. You shouldn’t be allowed to stand in front of one of those kiosks for more than 1 minute. If you do, the screen turns red and you are automatically placed between a screaming baby and the worlds fattest person, and directly in front of a sit kicker. That is the seat I always get and I’m not taking it anymore. Move along please.

In addition, in an airport there are some people in a HURRY. If you are not in a hurry, please move out of the way. This is especially true on moving sidewalks. If you don’t want to walk, PLEASE stay to the side and let those of us trying to catch a plane walk by you.
