Possible 22% Tax Increase for Maryville, TN

The Maryville (TN) City Council is weighing options to increase the property tax rate by 45 cents.  That is a 22% increase (current city rate is $2.05 per $1,000).  This is crazy.  They say it is to raise money to modernize the schools.  Don’t get me wrong; I am all for helping the schools, and Maryville has one of the best school systems in the state.  But perhaps we should stop building unnecessary foot bridges over the “duck pond” or look for better ways to REDUCE SPENDING before we just up the property tax 22%.  The Daily Times has the full article.  However, nowhere in the article do they even mention that the council is looking at ways to reduce other expenses to fund this project.
