Indian Tribes Secede from the United States

The Lakota Sioux Indian tribes have declared that they “have renounced treaties and are withdrawing from the United States.”  This has gone largely unnoticed over the holiday weekend, but I see this as an act of defiance that deserves swift action by the United States.  And by swift action I don’t mean giving in to what these folks want.

[Political activist Russell] Means said a Lakota delegation on Monday delivered a statement of “unilateral withdrawal” from the United States to the U.S. State Department in Washington.

The State Department did not respond. “That’ll take some time,” Means said.

Meanwhile, the delegation has delivered copies of the letter to the embassies of Bolivia, Venezuela, Chile and South Africa. “We’re asking for recognition,” Means said, adding that Ireland and East Timor are “very interested” in the declaration.

In essence they think they can live in the United States and have our protection without doing anything in return.  Whether they say they want our protection or not, they have it just by being situated inside the United States.  If the tribes are renouncing their treaties and seceding from the U.S., then I think it is justifiable that we take this land by force back for the USA.  This should not be overlooked by dealt with swiftly to set an example.

Please note that I do not know what our laws dictate in this situation, but I am curious to know.  If anyone has any insight on this, please post it in the comments.

Secession is a growing movement. Up to twenty-five states have been or are considering it.

It is their right in response to an abusive government to abolish or withdraw from such an oppressive government.

Sound familiar. No? Read the declaration of Independence.

The indians are the original owners of the land now called the United States. It was taken from them. What they own now, let them do with whatever they want. Just because they are smack in the middle of the United States, has nothing to do with their ownership. You sound like General George Custer reincarnated. Give them a break.
