Latest Huckabee “Negative” May Be a Positive

In the wake of Huckabee’s view on AIDS, another article surfaced about his statements to a Pastor’s Conference in 1998.  Some think this may hurt him, but I tend to agree with RedState and think this may strengthen his support, especially with those that are currently supporting him.  Here are some of Huckabee’s comments:

“Government knows it does not have the answer, but it’s arrogant and acts as though it does,” Huckabee said. “Church does have the answer but will cowardly deny that it does and wonder when the world will be changed.”

The [1997 school] shootings were just one more wake-up call to the nation, he said.

“I fear we will turn and hit the snooze button one more time and lose this great republic of ours.”

Huckabee said ungiving individuals are responsible for higher taxes.

“I’m often asked why taxes are so high and government is so big. It’s because the faith we have in local churches has become so small. If we’d been doing what we should have — giving a dime from every dollar to help the widows, the orphans and the poor — we now wouldn’t be giving nearly 50 cents of every dollar to a government that’s doing … what we should have been doing all along.”

He realizes that it is NOT government’s role to help everyone out, but it has been pushed into that role because those that are supposed to fill that void (the churches) have dropped the ball.

I have often felt this to be the case.  Churches and local organizations funded by private donations have a huge responsibility to the community.  So often we as conservatives are painted as uncaring and mean because we don’t believe the federal government has a role in filling these voids.  But that view comes with a responsibility that we as local communities and churches WILL fill this void and help those that truly need our help.  There are certainly individuals that are a little “down on their luck” and need some temporary help.  That is where we are to help out.  This is different than those that take advantage of the federal welfare system.  In our communities and churches we can not only give these people fish, but we truly can help them learn how to fish by connecting them with local employers, etc.  We actually have contact with the individuals as people, and they are not just a number getting a check.  Do some people take advantage of even the local food pantries, etc.?  Yes, but this happens much less than when dealing with the federal government helping these people.
