Thank you, NFL

The NFL actually decided to make a decision that will benefit their fans.  This year, NFL Network (which is not available on cable) has had the rights to many good games, including a good showdown between NFC leaders, Dallas and Green Bay a few weeks ago.  Also, NFL Network has the rights to the New England Patriots’ final game of the regular season.  The Patriots are trying to become only the second team in history to finish the regular season undefeated.

Contrary to their recent decisions, the NFL has decided to simulcast this game on NFL Network, CBS, and NBC.  Fans anywhere with a television will get to watch the game.

But the league announced Wednesday that the NFL Network feed will be simulcast on NBC and CBS. It’s a major concession by league officials, who repeatedly said they would not show the game anywhere but the NFL Network. The NFL had faced mounting pressure from politicians in recent weeks to make the game available to more viewers.

This will be the first three-network simulcast in NFL history and the first simulcast of any kind of an NFL game since the first Super Bowl in 1967, when CBS and NBC both televised the first meeting of the champions of the newly merged National Football League and American Football League.

As NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell goes on to say, “We have taken this extraordinary step because it is in the best interest of our fans.”  Yes, Mr. Goodell it is.  Thank you NFL for making a decision that benefits the fans rather than promoting your NFL Network.
