Poll: Divide In Democratic Party Hurts Dems in General Election

A recent Gallup poll shows that the Democrats’ heated battle will hurt them in the General Election against John McCain.

But only 59% of Democratic voters who support Clinton say they would vote for Obama against McCain, while 28% say they would vote for the Republican McCain. This suggests that some Clinton supporters are so strongly opposed to Obama (or so loyal to Clinton) that they would go so far as to vote for the “other” party’s candidate next November if Obama is the Democratic nominee.

So, 28% percent of Clinton’s supporters would vote for McCain.  Wow!  That is a high number.  They feeling is similar for Obama supporters:

Seventy-two percent of those who support Obama for the party’s nomination would vote for Clinton against McCain, while 19% would desert and vote for the Republican.

I actually figured the number would be higher among Obama supporters.  I certainly think this number would go up considerably if Clinton wins the nomination in a way that is viewed to be controversial.

These numbers are high because there is still a lot of racism and sexism with respect to these two candidates electability. Many people in this country will not vote for a black man regardless of his politics. Even more will not vote for a liberal black man.
Being a woman also makes it hard for Senator Clinton. I have to wonder if I really want a President who breaks down and cries on national TV because the stress of the campaign is getting to her. What will happen when the stress of the whole country is placed upon her?
