While speaking near me, to a group in East Tennessee this weekend, Herman Cain apparently made a comment that was controversial.
“When I’m in charge of the fence, we’re going to have a fence, 20 feet high, with barbed wire. It’s going to be electrified and there’s going to be a sign on the other side that says it will kill you.” Cain told supporters.
He has backed off from this comment, calling it a joke. However, why the outrage? If we build a fence, should it not be secure and electric? We would want to discourage folks from trying to cross it. I understand the outrage may come from the comment, “It will kill you.” I certainly think this is the part he was joking about. However, if we want to control immigration, a fence needs to be built, and it needs to really be effective using multiple defenses in order to discourage folks from entering this country illegally.
What do you think on this about Mr. Cain’s comments? Were they out of line?
