Toys in Happy Meals

Apparently a county in Silicon Valley (California, where else?!) has banned McDonald’s from including toys in their Happy Meals.  They say that the toys contribute to kids being fat.
And now a “watchdog group” is threatening to sue the company unless they remove the toys from all their Happy Meals everywhere.  They are saying the toys [...]

It’s Not About Race

Earth to President Carter,  Just because one man opposes something another man believes or says does not make him a racist.  For Mr. Carter and others, we can disagree in this country about policy without being racists.

Senate Investigating BCS

I dislike the way the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) determines a national champion as much as the next guy, but THIS is ridiculous.
Everyone from President Barack Obama on down to fans has criticized how college football determines its top team. Now senators are getting off the sidelines to examine antitrust issues involving the Bowl [...]

Trash

Jenny and I got out of the house for a few hours Friday night to go see a movie.  Grandma and Grandpa were nice enough to babysit so we could get out.  We headed to the dollar theatre (now the two-dollar theatre) in Knoxville.  There were a couple things we wanted to see, but our [...]

Absurd: PETA is at it again

PETA has written a letter to Ben & Jerry’s asking them to start using human breast milk instead of cow’s milk for their ice cream.
PETA said the health of consumers and cows would benefit from the switch.
This is ridiculous.  I am sure PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) was formed as a good [...]

End Fossil Fuel Dependence

Tam has a great post about a Letter to the Editor she saw in the newspaper.  The letter said we needed to end all of our use of fossil fuels in ten years.  Interestingly enough, Al Gore said the same thing last week.  Here is an excerpt of what Tam had to say about that:
May [...]

Homeschooling Outlawed in California

According to an LA Times article, homeschooling has been ruled illegal in California.
“Parents do not have a constitutional right to home school their children,” wrote Justice H. Walter Croskey in a Feb. 28 opinion signed by the two other members of the district court. “Parents who fail to [comply with school enrollment laws] may be [...]

Mandatory Paternity Testing In Tennessee

Thanks to Representative Hardaway, our wonderful Tennessee government is trying to pass a bill that would require mandatory paternity testing.  It would be required for ALL babies, regardless of the relationship between the child’s parents.  You can see the bill HERE (PDF).  Here is an excerpt:

( ) Regardless of the relationship between a child’s parents, [...]

Brits Losing Track of Reality

According to a recent survey, Brits are losing track of reality.
The survey found that 47 percent thought the 12th century English king Richard the Lionheart was a myth.
And 23 percent thought World War II prime minister Churchill was made up. The same percentage thought Crimean War nurse Florence Nightingale did not actually exist.
I just wonder who [...]

Property Tax Freeze Fleece

Recently the State of Tennessee voted to allow a Property Tax Freeze Program.  This permits individual governments to enact a property tax freeze for their constituents.  Blount County has voted to enact this for its residents.  I disagreed with the program from the start, but after finding out the details in a letter I received today, I am even [...]
